The borough has 22 designated conservation areas, including Kingston Old Town, Surbiton, and Hampton Wick, where Permitted Development rights are more restricted and things like side extensions or cladding usually need planning permission. Kingston’s Article 4 Directions are focused on protecting town centres and key employment areas rather than applying borough-wide to residential streets, but conservation area rules still apply separately, so we always check both before finalising a design.

Given the mix of housing stock across the borough, from period terraces to interwar semis, the right approach to an extension varies significantly street by street, and we tailor each design to the specific character of the property and area.
