Waverley is one of the more rural boroughs we work in. A large part of it falls within the Surrey Hills National Landscape (formerly the AONB), and Green Belt covers much of the remaining countryside. The council also maintains a Strategic Gap designation around Farnham, Godalming, Haslemere, and Cranleigh, specifically to stop these towns merging into one another as open land is developed. Together, these designations mean that even a fairly modest extension on the edge of one of Waverley’s towns can need a carefully argued planning case.
